What is YYC Cache & Release?

Calgary's premier geocaching event is a Cache & Release event. This weekend-long event celebrate new geocache hides, the social side of geocaching, and community outreach. Also, its just plain fun!

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Hiding Caches

Every event we have problems with rural land owners and the increased traffic on their roads. Our recommendation is to explore the I Think We've Been Here Before category, or to hide caches where the increased traffic will not cause issues.

Please note the submission deadline of September 23, 2019

Feel free to enjoy the yyccar19 event without having hidden any caches! What makes these weekend events great is the new caches that are released out into the wilds of Calgary and they are what keep the events going!

A Few Hiding Rules

  • CAR weekends are busy for new caches, be sure your log book can hold 100+ names. Also be available to check on your cache over the weekend.

  • Caches which are hidden within the categories listed below are eligible for best cache. If your cache does not fit the category, people will enjoy finding it, but it will not be in the competition for best cache.

Hiding Area

Cache Listing Guidelines

  • Include YYCCAR19 at either the beginning or the end of your cache name. This will assist geocachers searching for the caches for this event.

  • Please use attributes liberally on your caches. Many families look specifically for kid friendly caches. Also be familiar with the limitations of non-premium members and app users. Consider making your cache findable by beginners!

  • Flashlight Caches

In the short description for your cache include the following text:

This cache has been placed for the YYCCAR19 event, held October 4-6, 2019.
This cache was placed with the intention that it not be found prior to 8:00pm on October 4, 2019.
Caches for the YYCCAR19 event are published early
so the geocaching community can plan their search routes before the event starts.
  • All Other Geocaches:

In the short description for your cache include the following text:

This cache has been placed for the YYCCAR19 event, held October 4-6, 2019.
This cache was placed with the intention that it not be found prior to 11AM on October 5, 2019.
Caches for the YYCCAR18 event are published early
so the geocaching community can plan their search routes before the event starts.
  • If your cache is entered in the voting categories, include the following HTML snippets as appropriate at the top of the cache description:
(There is no limit to the number of caches you may hide in each category)

I Think We've Been Here Before

    The ultimate in geocaching recycling
